Claims

CLAIMS
Claims will open on Friday, July 3 in preparation for game start on Friday, July 10, after which they will stay open indefinitely. All applications received after game start should receive a response within 72 hours. There is a character cap of 40 and a cast cap of 6.

Character cap: 24/40

  • There are no reserves — first come, first served.

  • In the event of two claims for the same character, preference will always be given to the version played in Balance RP.

  • Players have 72 hours to submit revisions. If they fail to do so within that time period, their claim will be rejected and they will have to wait 1 week to resubmit their claim.

  • Each player can have a maximum of two characters. However, if you would like to claim a second character, please check with us here first!

  • Claims will remain open until the conclusion of the first arc of Imaginary Island, after which time they will close for plot reasons. More concrete dates will be made available as the first arc progresses, but this time frame is anticipated to be about 1.5-2 months (meaning claims will close around the end of August or beginning of September 2020).

Age: Real/apparent.
Balance Import? Yes/no.

History: For original characters that did not participate in Balance RP. All other claims do not need to fill this section out. Please give us an idea of the original world your character is coming from and the events that have led up to this point in their life. Keep this brief; we'd like an absolute maximum of 700 words.

Personality: For original characters that did not participate in Balance RP. All other claims do not need to fill this section out. Please give us a brief idea of what your character is like! No more than a couple of paragraphs are necessary. Feel free to format as bullet points or more formally — it's your choice.

Character ability: If your character has a canon ability that you would like to adapt into the setting, describe it here. You may pick only one canon ability. Gauge whether it is overpowered for the setting and, if so, please describe how you plan to nerf it for the purposes of Island. We may ask for further tweaks if we have concerns about its functionality in-game.

Inventory: List everything your character has on them at arrival on Island. If your character is a Balance import, they can bring everything they had on the Moon Base as long as you list it here. If your character is coming in fresh, they can have one non-magical weapon on hand.

Sample: We'd like to see a sample of any length, as long as you feel it's representative of your character's voice and personality. For Balance Transfers, this is where you can put the link to your old app or a thread from Balance.

Paths

Primary Path: Please list your character's first chosen path.
Secondary Path: Please list your character's second chosen path. If you haven't decided on one yet, write "undecided."
Advanced Path: Please list your character's advanced path, if applicable. If you haven't decided on one yet, write "undecided". If you are opting to max a secondary path instead of taking an advanced path, write "none" or "N/A".

Why these paths?: Let us know in a few sentences why you've chosen the paths you did for your character! How do they fit with the character's personality, or in what interesting ways do they contrast? If you are grandfathering in paths that your character previously had in Balance, you do not need to provide an explanation, but for any new paths we'd like to know your reasoning.

Path Actions: Provide a list of path actions your character will have access to on Island. As a reminder, Balance imports have the opportunity to arrive on Island with all path actions maxed out; if you'd like to take that option, please list all path actions here. New characters will have all primary path actions when they arrive on Island.

Character Information

Name: Venus
Canon: We Know the Devil
Canon Point: True End
Age: 21
Balance Import? Yes!

Character ability: I'm just copying and pasting from her original Balance app:
  1. Canon Power: Radio
Venus will be arriving with a "weapon/item" of sorts in the form of her radio from back home. The radio's much more eldritch and unknowable than your average crystal radio, but it does bear some passing resemblances: wires, crystals, and so on. With a bit of tinkering, I'd like for Venus to incorporate it into her dancer's garb and weaponry - a galena crystal as a centerpiece of jewelry around her neck, wires coiling down her arms and looping around two daggers to ground them to it, and so on! From here, I have some ideas that I'll lay out all together (with the full knowledge that some or all of these may be denied):

    • Cosmetic: While Venus's daggers are hooked into the radio, I think it'd be neat for their blades to take on the appearance of light (in keeping with her element from back home). This is mainly for pretty "tracing patterns of light through the air" and making her weapons look closer to what she would have used back home; it wouldn't be treated as Radiant damage or anything like that. (Unless that's fine? In which case sure??)
    • Activation/Path: I'd really like for Venus to be able to activate the radio to communicate with the devil! Specifically, this would be fairly similar in concept to having a patron like a Warlock; however, where a Warlock's patron could (presumably) contact them through any means, Venus would have to stop what she was doing to open up communication herself. This would mainly be done by bringing both daggers into contact when hooked in, thus "closing the circuit" and allowing for the radio to broadcast. Other people would also be able to hear this communication.
    • (P) Corruption: The idea behind this is fairly simple! In canon, the devil is able to convince others to lay down their burdens and become something new. While full transformation is probably a little extreme for a game with defined powers and powersets, I thought it might be neat for Venus to be able to "buff people up" temporarily while broadcasting, provided that 1) they don't "reject" the devil's offer and 2) are within earshot. This could range anywhere from a temporary transformation (think a cosmetic shift, or some small willing body horror) to a small D&D buff (you feel lighter on your feet, more full, etc.).

I do also like the idea of permanent Devilhood being an accessible option pending CR and character development, like it was for Erika and Terezi, BUT that's only if it's acceptable to the mods. o7

Inventory: Things from the moon base, mainly including:
  • Her Radio Daggers;
  • A picture of Neptune and Jupiter from the early days of the terminal;
  • Her dancing clothes;
  • The black dress that Giselle made her for her first "cute clothes."

Sample: Old app here!

Paths

Primary Path: Dancer
Secondary Path: Warlock
Advanced Path: Dragoon

Why this path?: Dancer was an easy fit for Venus - eyes on her, "please see me," a distraction and a grace as she grew more and more comfortably happy with the body the Devil gave her. Warlock was just as easy, since she *is* the Devil, and thus is her own pactmaster - the same as the other two girls who are the Devil along with her. And Dragoon (the new path) gave interesting parallels to the Biblical serpent, along with extending her visiblity/mobility as a dancer and giving her wings more play.

plus terezi's player and i are joking about how terezi is the dragon haha get it it's because they're fu

Path Actions:
Dancer:
  1. Allure
  2. Master of Faces
  3. Telekinesis
  4. Acrobatics
  5. Hidden Knife
  6. Quick Employment
  7. Break Dance
  8. Shocking Grasp
  9. Hex
  10. Calm Emotions

Warlock:
  1. Otherworldly Patron (Devil)
  2. Pact of the Blade (radio)
  3. Force Distrust
  4. True Strike
  5. Eldritch Blast

Dragoon:
  1. Dragon's Blood (Bronze)
  2. Dragoon Trance
  3. Battle Litany

Sure thing! Let me try to elaborate on the parts you've mentioned:

Duration: Exclusively active while Venus is actively broadcasting. Think along the lines of (in classic D&D mechanics, not necessarily Imaginary mechanics!) a bard inspiring their party, rather than buffing for later. A single roll (for RNG) or a single thread (for narrative) should be appropriate here, I think.

Modifier: Since we're looking for a concrete modifier... Bard's Bardic Inspiration path action adds +2 modifier to the roll through morale, in addition to its other features. If the character ability is intended to be roughly equal with other actions, +2 seems appropriate here; otherwise, +1 should be a less powerful alternative.

I think by "minor D&D buff," a better way to put it would be that the bonus narratively works differently than other bonuses. A Bard's performance is narratively based on inspiration and morale; the Devil's could be based around mild temporary transformations in appropriate ways. (As an example, Bardic Inspiration's +2 to weathering the heat of lava might be described as "giving [you] the courage to grit your teeth and bear it;" Corruption's +2 might be "warping and hardening [your] skin, letting the heat pass over you."

(This also means we don't have to worry about RNG interaction outside of the +2 use case, making it much easier to balance!)

Devilhood: In Venus's canon, becoming the devil is fairly clear in its implications: you radically, fully accept yourself and your flaws, and even embrace things that society might have shunned for you. (It's also not particularly subtle in its metaphor for queerness.) Venus being openly transgender is a part of her becoming the devil, as was Terezi's ability to speak about the things that had hurt her in the past.

As far as how this would work in-game, a character who was struggling with some significant part of themselves - whether positive or negative - would need to work towards accepting themselves, with a large focus through their interactions with the devil trio. At some point, this would end with Venus channeling the radio, the two of them speaking with "the Devil" (who is Venus/Terezi/Erika and also not them IT'S COMPLICATED), and a cathartic body horror scene because sometimes being queer is messy and scary.

Because WKTD is also a canon steeped in metaphor and magical realism, this mainly comes out in a physical transformation. Two examples:
  • Venus grew "eyes to fly with, and wings to see" as a result of her desire to be seen by others as who she was.
  • Jupiter grows "a storm of arms and hands," as a result of her being shamed as a young lesbian and acknowledging that she wants to hold and touch other girls.

While the physical transformations can range from mild to dramatic, my default stance is that it shouldn't actually provide any mechanical powers. The point of a devil and their design isn't a way to attain power, it's a reflection of their own struggles and journey to acceptance. Essentially, this would be a cosmetic change echoing a much more important character development.

I know that that's a LOT of text up there. If you have any more clarification questions or requests, please just ask or message me and I'm happy to explain!
